Motoring bills 'will not change for some time'
Tuesday, July 6th 2010
British drivers have been given a boost by one expert, who says road pricing will not come into effect for some time.
Speaking of the possibility of tariffs to use certain routes, Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, says the scheme is "many, many years away".
This could be good news for those running a car, van or other vehicle, with road charging potentially leading to a rise in motoring bills.
Responding to the RAC Foundation's claim that road pricing is "inevitable", Mr Greig states: "It requires such a wholesale change in government policy though that I think it is still many, many years away. There are all sorts of practical difficulties and one-off costs."
Any government that imposes the levy would have to reduce or cut road tax and fuel prices, making it unpopular in Westminister, believes the expert.
The RAC Foundation suggested such a move to road pricing is necessary if the UK is to avoid gridlock.
