World Cup could trigger money worries among Brits
Monday, June 28th 2010
A significant number of Britons could find themselves with new cash concerns following the conclusion of the World Cup in mid-July.
Banking firm Santander estimates the cost experienced by football fans of making up to their partner after spending time watching the tournament will be £260 million.
Some 100,000 people are expected to spend at least £500 on trying to appease their lover after a month spent in front of the television.
In total, 2.7 million believe they will have to compensate their other half once the final is over on July 11th.
"Emotions run wild during World Cup time, but everything comes at a price, particularly for those with partners who'd rather not have to watch a whole month of football," explains Andy Smith, spokesman for Santander Current Accounts.
The good news for some cash-strapped Britons is that interest in the tournament may wane now England have been knocked out, following yesterday's (June 27th) 4-1 defeat to Germany.
