Now government 'must not shelve plans for saving'
Thursday, May 13th 2010
The new government must encourage saving and not forget the ageing population.
Andrea Rozario, director general of Safe Home Income Plans (SHIP), explained more than 18 million people will be over 55 by 2011 and their needs must be recognised by David Cameron and his government.
In the run up to the general election, both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats revealed plans for pensions and social care.
"We hope that these ideas will be enhanced and evolved rather than shelved in the policy reshuffle necessary to run a coalition government," Ms Rozario said.
David Cameron, who was appointed as prime minister on Tuesday (May 11th), admitted there might be difficulties involved in running a coalition government.
Ms Rozario said she was "delighted" at the prospect of this union, but that education was now needed to show how important it is to plan for retirement.
A three-point strategy with education, communication and cooperation was promoted by SHIP as a way to deal with the challenges ahead.
