Insurer warns of weather dangers
Wednesday, February 10th 2010
Homeowners should make sure they take precautions against burst pipes as the Met Office anticipates temperatures will drop again this week, according to an insurer.
Axa warned that homeowners could face costs totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds if a pipe bursts due to freezing weather.
With the average damage caused by a burst pipe thought to total around £30,000, the 20 per cent of UK households that do not have home contents insurance could be particularly affected.
"Our research shows that people don't realise the importance of protecting their water systems from freezing conditions," commented Nick Kidd, head of home insurance at Axa.
He added: "Not only does burst pipe damage have financial implications, especially if insurance is not in place, but it can also cause huge emotional trauma from ruined personal belongings."
The Red Cross has provided a number of helpful steps to cut the risk of frozen pipes.
It advised that water should be drained from water sprinkler supply lines, adding that homeowners should ensure that hot and cold water pipes in basements, attics and garages are insulated.
Running water through pipes - even at a drip - may also help them from freezing as it ensures the liquid keeps moving.
