Expert: Number of identity fraud victims increasing
Thursday, December 10th 2009
Christmas shoppers are advised not to carry cards in their pockets, particularly at a time when fraud is on the increase.
CPP, a company which provides identity, mobile phone and plastic card support and protection, is advising customers on how to avoid becoming a victim.
Card fraud expert at CPP Sarah Blaney said cards should be kept in purses or wallets where they are harder to steal.
Ms Blaney emphasised the importance of checking receipts and bank statements after finishing Christmas shopping to ensure people are aware of all transactions.
Some 31 per cent of people were victims of fraud after their card was lost or stolen, a CPP survey found in November.
The UK's Fraud Prevention Service (CIFAS) reported an increase of 37 per cent of identity fraud victims with 68,000 cases noted in the first ten months of 2009.
More cards are usually lost or stolen in the lead up to the festive period than other times of year, Ms Blaney said.
She advises Christmas shoppers to only carry the one or two cards necessary and to keep them "tucked away safely".
